Summary : During these last fifty years there has been a significant evolution of otology and of the sub-speciality otoneurology since their introduction as a surgical discipline in the nineteenth and at the beginning of the twentieth century. This was due to numerous scientific developments, pharmacologic, economic, socio-cultural and technical factors.
...
In conclusion these three examples show that this half century corresponds to a radical transformation of otology. It became established as a separate speciality in the same way as ophthalmology, a comparable discipline which was separated from Otorhinolaryngology at the beginning of the last century. Does ORL also risk losing the ear? This would amount to a destruction of the speciality. I really don’t think this will occur. I am confident that the general Otorhinolaryngology will survive the development of speciality and will remain vital for making the diagnosis and referring the patient to the highly specialised surgeon in the public or private sector where appropriate.
