This annual issue, specifically dedicated to phoniatrics, focuses on the main topic of the Congress of the French Society of Phoniatrics (SFP) 2016. It was the second Congress of the SFP organized in the province of Lyon, under the aegis of Dr Bruno Coulombeau. As President of the SFP, he had chosen this theme, the velum.
This may seem surprising coming from a leading expert in anatomical and functional analysis of the larynx (stroboscopic in particular). Subject to the «usual» problems of phoniatry, this choice prompted many of the speakers to deepen their theoretical knowledge, to question the role of this structure in their clinical practice.
The soft palate is a structure at once so accessible to clinical examination, and at the same time less known. This is a functional crossway and the actor of multiple functions in several areas at the confluence of laryngology, phoniatry, and even rhinology. It is also place to multiple pathologies that often require multidisciplinary management for both their diagnosis and treatment. Is the transversality and functional aspect of the upper aerodigestive tract, in the center of Phoniatry?
The aim of articles on the velum is to summarize, update knowledge about the structure, its means of exploration, the main pathologies of which it is the place of their treatments. The second part of this volume includes research articles, remaining in more classical themes of phoniatry with articles on the singing voice, neuro-laryngology and functional suites in oncology. Thus this innovative issue is both educational on the theme of the soft palate while presenting research in most fields covered by phoniatry.
It is important here to thank all the authors without whom this issue would not have been published.
