Summary : Introduction: Healthy ear canal skin has an acidic pH. Evidence suggests that in case of otitis, ear canal skin pH becomes more alkaline and that a reacidification of the ear canal may lead to resolution of otitis externa. Objectives: Because no data are available on the pH values of ear drops currently used in the treatment of otitis in France, our study will determine if the pH of ear drops are acidic as advised by the literature or neutral or even alkaline. Methods: The pH of the 6 most commonly used topical ear drop preparations in France was measured using a Seven Compact S210 pH meter. Results: The pH values ranged from 2.4 to 6.5. Two preparations out of six tested were far above pH 5 and only two preparations were below pH 4. Conclusion: Although the reacidification of the ear canal may help in the treatment of otitis, only one-third of the ear drops commercialized tested contain a real strong acidic pH beneficial for the external ear canal.
